1940s Weekends and Wartime Events

Next up: Steam Back to the Forties at the North Norfolk Railway — Sat 19 – Sun 20 Sep 2026, Norfolk.

A 1940s weekend turns a heritage railway into a working period set: steam trains, big band music, re-enactors, ration-book cookery and a remarkable number of people who own genuinely good vintage tailoring. The Severn Valley's event, usually run across two weekends in late June and early July, is the biggest, and the Watercress Line's War on the Line in June is a strong second. Most lines fit at least one wartime event into the calendar somewhere between May and October.

Dressing up is optional, and about half the crowd does it, anywhere from a sensible tea dress to full Home Guard. If you go in uniform, read the event's dress guidance first: most organisers publish rules, and German uniforms are banned or heavily restricted at nearly all of them. In plain clothes you will be equally welcome and considerably more comfortable in July.

For families these are among the easiest events on the calendar: singing, vintage vehicles, sweet rations and trains all day, with dance evenings for the grown-ups after the last service. Listings here carry dates and dress guidance links, checked weekly.

1940s Weekends: your questions answered

Do I have to dress up?

No, and about half the visitors do not. If you fancy it, a simple 1940s look, tea dress or shirt, tie and braces, is easy to put together, and the full-vintage crowd are usually delighted to talk sourcing.

Are there rules about uniforms?

Yes, at almost every event. Organisers publish dress codes, Allied uniforms are generally fine, and German or SS uniforms are banned or tightly restricted. Read the event's guidance before you buy anything.

Are 1940s weekends good for children?

Very. There is music, vehicles, people in costume and trains all day, which covers most children's interests, and lines often add activities like evacuee trails. Ear defenders help for the occasional battle re-enactment.

When do the main 1940s weekends happen?

The season runs roughly May to October, with the biggest events in June and July, including the Severn Valley's two weekends and the Watercress Line's War on the Line. A few lines run autumn wartime events as well.

Do I need to book a 1940s weekend?

For the big ones, yes. They are among the busiest days of the year on any line and some are pre-book only. Advance day rovers also skip the entrance queue, which matters when the car park is a field.
