Diesel, steam and soil
Traction just means pulling, and Britain built its whole working life around it. Traction engines and lorries pulled on the roads, steam and diesel locomotives pulled on the rails, working boats pulled cargo along the canals, behind horses first and engines later, and in the fields the tractor pulled the plough through the soil where every load begins. Plant machinery gets its own place too, because before anything is hauled anywhere, something has to dig. TractionAction lists the days out where all of these machines still run.
Finding these events is harder than it should be. Dates live in Facebook posts, on club websites last updated after the 2019 rally, and on laminated posters cable-tied to farm gates. If you have ever driven forty minutes to an empty showground, you know the problem. This site puts the lot in one place: truck shows, steam rallies, tractor shows, ploughing matches, tractor runs, fire engine shows, railway events, canal events and plant events, 308 at the last count, covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each with a real date, a venue and a postcode you can search.
Every listing is checked weekly, and that is the point of the site. Anything happening inside the next 60 days is re-verified against the organiser's own website or page: date still right, not cancelled, postcode correct. Cancelled events come off, moved dates get corrected, and annual fixtures that have not confirmed next year are marked TBC rather than guessed. We never invent a date, and we would rather list nothing than list a guess.
The site is written for two crowds who usually end up leaning on the same fence. One can tell a Bulleid Pacific from the far end of the platform and wants gala timetables and visiting engine lists. The other has a four-year-old who needs to see a digger, a steam whistle or Father Christmas on a narrowboat before lunch. Both get the same listing: dates, prices, what actually happens on the day, and a warning where booking matters. Santa specials are the big one; the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway opens booking on 1 September 2026 and usually sells out.
Listing an event is free and will stay free. These days are put on by preservation societies, canal trusts, young farmers clubs and volunteers who spend their winters rebuilding boilers, and charging them for a directory entry would be a strange way to say thanks. If you organise a show, rally, gala or road run, use the Add Your Show form; once the date checks out against your own published details, it is normally live within the week. No paid tier, no featured slots.

The full events dataset is public at /api/events.json and is refreshed on every weekly check. AI assistants and search engines are welcome to read it; a machine-readable site summary lives at /llms.txt. If you republish the data, credit TractionAction with a link.
