UK Railway Events 2026 & 2027

Next up: The Jacobite Steam Train 2026 Season — Selected dates, 1 Jun – 23 Oct 2026, Highland.

The heritage railway year runs to a rhythm, and once you know it, planning gets easy. Spring is when the big galas start: lines such as the Severn Valley and the Great Central borrow visiting locomotives, run intensive timetables and open the season properly. May and June bring diesel festivals and the first 1940s weekends, while the evenings stretch out and the lineside photographers reappear.

Summer belongs to families. Through the school holidays most lines switch to daily running, with meet-the-engine days, character weekends and kids-travel-cheap offers doing the heavy lifting. Then September and October hand the railways back to the enthusiasts for autumn gala season, the busiest few weeks of the year, before the whole country pivots to Santa specials from late November. Those sell out earlier than almost anything else in this directory, often by October.

TractionAction lists every railway event we can verify, and we check the lot weekly, so a date on this site is a date you can book around. Search by postcode to find what is running near you, or sign up for the Weekly Runsheet, our Thursday email, and let the good stuff come to you.

Railway Events: your questions answered

What is a steam gala?

A steam gala is an intensive event weekend where a heritage railway runs far more trains than normal, usually with visiting locomotives borrowed from other lines. Expect an early start, a late finish, demonstration goods trains and a day rover ticket that lets you ride everything.

What is a day rover ticket?

A day rover is one ticket giving unlimited travel on a line for the whole day. It is the standard ticket at galas and usually the best value at any event, since you can hop on and off at intermediate stations rather than doing one return trip.

When should I book Santa specials?

Book in the summer, ideally as soon as your nearest line opens sales. Most Santa specials go on sale between June and September, and the popular slots, weekend afternoons and Christmas Eve, are usually gone by October.

Are railway events suitable for young children?

Yes, most are. Heritage lines are built around family visitors, with pushchair space in the brake coach, cafes, and platforms to watch engines from. For toddlers, a normal running day or a family event is a gentler start than a packed gala.

Are dogs allowed at railway events?

On most heritage railways yes, usually free or for a small fee, on a lead and out of the dining coaches. Check the individual event listing though, as some galas and Santa specials restrict dogs because of crowds.

How often are these listings checked?

Weekly. Every event in the railway section gets re-verified against the organiser's own published dates, so cancellations and date changes are caught fast. If something moves, the listing moves with it.
