Santa Special Trains in the UK

Next up: The Polar Express Train Ride at the Spa Valley Railway — Selected dates, 6 Nov – 30 Dec 2026, Kent.

Here is the only Santa special advice that matters: book before October. Sales open in summer, June to September depending on the line, and weekend slots and Christmas Eve go first. Every November the same question comes in about which lines still have seats, and every November the honest answer is midweek, far away, or next year.

The format is happily consistent across the country: a steam or heritage diesel train, Santa working through the coaches with a present for every child, and something warming for the adults, usually a mince pie and a nip of something. Prices mostly sit between about £15 and £35 a seat, and some lines sell private compartments for families. A handful of railways run separately licensed film tie-in experiences at a higher price; everything else is a Santa special, and none the worse for it.

This page lists every UK Santa train we can verify, and we re-check the lot weekly through the autumn. Sold out here means actually sold out, and on sale means the organiser's own site says so. Postcode search finds your nearest, and the Weekly Runsheet flags lines the moment sales open.

Santa Special Trains: your questions answered

When do Santa specials go on sale?

Mostly between June and September, with a few lines opening as early as spring. The popular dates, weekend afternoons and Christmas Eve, are usually gone by October, so booking in September is sensible and booking in November is optimistic.

How much do Santa specials cost?

Typically £15 to £35 per seat including a present for each child, with adults often paying the same as children. Private compartments for a family group run higher, roughly £70 to £150 depending on the line.

Do babies need a ticket?

Usually yes, though most lines sell a cheap or free under-2 ticket without a seat or present. Check the listing, because a few railways include a small gift for babies and charge accordingly.

What actually happens on board?

The train does a steady round trip of 45 minutes to an hour and a half while Santa moves through the coaches with helpers, giving every child a present and a chat. Refreshments come round too, and stations are usually dressed with lights and sometimes a grotto.

What if my local line is sold out?

Look midweek, look at early December, and look one line further away. Returns do appear, so it is worth checking again in late November, and our weekly re-checks catch released seats.

Are Santa specials steam-hauled?

Often but not always, and a heritage diesel can substitute in bad weather or during maintenance. If steam matters to you, check the listing notes, though at 4pm in December the lights and the hot chocolate matter more to most children.
