Mainline Steam in the UK

Next up: The Jacobite Steam Train 2026 Season — Selected dates, 1 Jun – 23 Oct 2026, Highland.

Mainline steam is the full-size version: preserved locomotives certified to run on the national network at up to 75mph, hauling day tours over real distances. The Jacobite between Fort William and Mallaig runs most days from spring to October and is the easiest ride to book. Elsewhere, operators such as the Railway Touring Company and Steam Dreams run day trips out of major cities, with the Settle and Carlisle line the classic route for a proper mountain climb behind steam.

You do not need a ticket to enjoy it. Half the audience is lineside, and stations, bridges and public footpaths give safe, legal viewing. Timings shift, sometimes on the day, so check running information before you set off, and never cross to the track side of a fence; a 75mph steam train is not expecting you. Big names like Flying Scotsman and Tornado pull serious crowds, so arrive early for the famous spots.

Tours are listed here with dates, routes and booking links, checked weekly, because charters get retimed and occasionally cancelled at short notice when a locomotive fails or paths change.

Mainline Steam & Railtours: your questions answered

What counts as mainline steam?

Steam locomotives certified for the national network, running charters and scheduled tourist trains on ordinary tracks alongside normal traffic. It is a different thing from a heritage railway, which owns its own line and runs at 25mph.

Can I watch without buying a ticket?

Yes, and thousands do. Stations, road bridges and footpath crossings are the safe options. Stay behind fences, expect timings to shift by half an hour either way, and be in position early, because a steam charter does not hang about for photographers.

How do I find out timings?

Our listings carry the operator's published times, and enthusiasts cross-check on the day using live running tools, since charters are often retimed. If a tour matters to you, confirm on the morning.

How much does a mainline steam tour cost?

Day tours generally start around £100 in standard class and rise to £250 or more for premier dining. The Jacobite is cheaper, being a scheduled tourist service rather than a charter, which is partly why it books out months ahead.

Is the Jacobite always steam-hauled?

Steam is the plan for the advertised season, but diesel substitution happens when a locomotive fails or fire risk is high in a dry summer. The operator flags it when known, and refund policies for diesel days vary, so read the terms.

When does Flying Scotsman run?

A handful of tours and heritage line visits a year, announced tour by tour through the operating companies rather than on one fixed calendar. Its dates sell out fastest of anything on the main line, which is why they get flagged in the Weekly Runsheet the day they appear.
